POSITION TITLE: Public Works Maintenance Worker

JOB OBJECTIVE:
The Public Works Maintenance Worker performs a wide variety of manual labor and equipment operations to maintain municipal infrastructure. This position handles diverse tasks across streets, parks, stormwater systems, and public facilities.
JOB SUMMARY:
The Public Works Maintenance Worker performs routine and skilled labor to construct, repair, and maintain city-owned property, infrastructure, and right-of-ways. This entry-to-mid-level role operates power tools and light-to-heavy machinery, ensuring public spaces remain safe, clean, and operational for the community.
- Street & Sidewalk Maintenance: Repairs potholes, patches asphalt, pours concrete for sidewalks, and replaces damaged regulatory street signs.
- Grounds & Parks Keeping: Mows right-of-ways, clears brush, trims trees blocking sightlines, and maintains public park landscaping.
- Stormwater & Drainage: Clears debris from culverts, maintains drainage ditches, repairs catch basins, and mitigates localized flooding hazards.
- Debris & Waste Removal: Collects and disposes of roadside litter, manages seasonal leaf collection, and clears storm debris or fallen trees from roadways.
- Facility Maintenance: Performs basic building repairs, painting, pressure washing, and preventative maintenance at city-owned facilities.
- Equipment Care: Conducts daily safety pre-inspections and routine maintenance on assigned vehicles, tools, and heavy machinery.
- Seasonal Operations: Operates snowplows, salt spreaders, or storm response equipment during severe weather events.

- Sanitation Services: Performs waste collection and disposal duties.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
GENERAL REQUIREMENTS:
- To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
- Must have the ability to learn the equipment, materials and methods used.
- Needs to be able to apply basic mechanical rules and principles.
- Must have knowledge of computers and calculators and be able to apply simple formulas.
- Must be able to establish and maintain effective relationships with team.
- Must be conscious and conscientious and concerned with the welfare of others.
- Must have the ability to solve problems to determine causes of changes in the process.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
- Education: High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
- Experience: Minimum of 2 years of experience in construction, landscaping, manual labor, or equipment operation.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
- Driver's License: A valid Georgia Driver's License is required, with a clean driving record. (A commercial CDL is highly preferred but often optional for entry-level general labor).
- Safety: Ability to learn and follow OSHA Safety Standards, including proper use of PPE and temporary work zone traffic control.
- Willingness to learn about the operation of equipment as needed.
- Ability to make minor adjustments and do minor service as required.
- Must maintain good work attendance.
- Ability to learn the general geography of the City of Cleveland.
- Ability to perform assigned duties under adverse weather conditions.
- Ability to deal tactfully with the public.
Physical Demands & Work Environment:
- Heavy Labor: Must be able to lift, carry, and push heavy objects weighing up to 50–100 pounds frequently.
- Extreme Conditions: Prolonged outdoor work in all weather conditions, including extreme heat, heavy rain, and freezing temperatures.
- Environmental Hazards: Frequent exposure to open trenches, heavy moving machinery, loud noises, and untreated wastewater.
